Osteoarthritis is vataj vyadhi and the most common degenerative disease seen in old age people. According to WHO Osteoarthritis (sandhigat vata vyadhi ) is the second common musculoskeletal problem in the world.
Acharya Charka was the 1st person who described the disease separately named as ‘Sandhigat Anila’. Acharya Charka considered Vata Vyadhi as ‘Maha roga ‘.

Following are the most widely used herbs which helps in reducing knee joint pain.
- SHALLAKI ( Boswellia Serreta ):- Supports the prevention of excessive joint wear and tear by inhibiting Glycosaminoglycans degradation, the structural element of joint cartilage supporting normal lubrication and shock-absorbing, essential for proper joint structure and function.
- ASWAGANDHA ( Withania Somnifera ):- The extract of the Aswagnadha herb has been proven to suppress the creation of pro-inflammatory molecules. It includes TNF-alpha and interleukin subtypes. Ashwagandha’s healing effects are comparable to the steroid hydrocortisone.
- SUNTHI ( DRY GINGER ):- SUNTHI, when taken in small amounts regularly, will benefit the health and goes a long way for knee problems cure. SUNTHI works as an anti-inflammatory. It interferes with an enzyme called cyclooxygenase which produces the inflammatory chemicals in the body. Research shows that ginger has a beneficial effect on OA, especially for knee pain.
- GUGGLU ( Commiphora wighti ):- This helps in regulating the body’s inflammatory response. Several studies have shown decreased inflammation and reduced swelling after using Gugglu resin.

Home Remedies for Osteoarthritis or Sandhivata
- Make a clean muslin or cotton cloth POTALI,
- take 1cup of rice powder mix with 2 tsp of dry ginger powder, 2 tsp of ajmodadi powder & 1 tsp of sandhav lavan
- Take a cup of sesame oil and mildly heat it in a pan
- Check the warmth of the potali and apply gently on the joints
- These potali massages are helpful in promoting muscle and joint relaxation.
- METHI : METHI is a high-grade antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, making it a preferred choice for joint pain treatment. Swallow one medium-sized teaspoon of METHI powder mixed with honey and drink a glass of lukewarm water with it. Do not gulp down the entire glass in one go! Take slow sips. Soon enough, you will notice a difference in the severity of pain will reduce.
